My experience with productivity..
What is productivity? It is simply defined as the state of being productive by Google.
Before we dive deep into the topic let's understand where the concept of productivity stems from.It was first used around the 1700s and 1800s by the likes of Benjamin Franklin and Adam Smith.
My experience with productivity has not been the best.Reason being that I was dependent on someone else(the media) to define productivity for me .
If I did not complete the tasks I had, I felt guilty and "unproductive"
I then decided to help myself overcome this problem:
Heading to the internet to rid myself of my misery was the only fit solution.
And guess what, I did find tips and tricks to rid myself of my unproductivity
You may ask what they were:
*Work for long periods of time:
For me this sounded like torture but nonetheless I did it.A few days down the line and I quit.Reason being that it was impossible to keep up and I felt more tired than usual.
*Follow a routine everyday:
Whilst this seemed not too difficult to do ,it proved to be rather unrealistic as my day would obviously not be the same everyday.I had to allow for some diversity in my day . Plus doing the same thing everyday with no change seems boring (for some people having a routine is somewhat what their lives revolve around so take what I'm saying as a personal experience and not something you are obliged to follow).
*Have a checklist:
Whilst checklists are a great way to track what you have and haven't completed,in terms of productivity they had sort of a negative impact on me . Once you tick off a task you would feel satisfied or pleased with yourself.I would push to get all the tasks ticked off my list and whether or not I understood what I was doing was of no concern for me.This would go on to affect me in the long run as my way of grasping concepts had been discarded . And for what? All for a tick in a tiny box and a second's worth of satisfaction.
Before I go in circles a to do list is not bad .It however loses its true/meaningful use once you decide not to appreciate the concept around to-do lists.
I also tried some apps in the process which too made no significant difference.
They either had general tips or if they had potential they needed me to go premium.
Now I've started redefining productivity.
It's okay if I don't follow the same routine day in day out, it's okay if I don't work for long hours and it's totally okay too if the task isn't entirely complete. What matters is getting enough rest at the end of the day.
So what does being productive really mean to me?
Enjoying the process of getting the work done and also having the end product (the work) being perfect. All in all productivity is the state of being one with the task . That's the only way you would complete it right?
At the end of the year I will be posting an update on my productivity journey.
Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed it..
