Some South African Novels I have read
The first South African novel I had been exposed to was Hlomu the wife by Dudu Busani Dube.
Now back to my exposure with the book: I took it upon myself to read this exciting storyline filled with pain and excitement in order to understand my peer's frustrations as to why the series did no justice by the book.
I decided to dive deeper and find similar stories and guess what,I went down a rabbit hole of these. Here are some of the books I've read:
*Hlomu the wife by Dudu Busani Dube:
A young girl moves to Johannesburg to pursue her career in journalism where she ends up falling for a taxi owner(Mqhele). The book follows Hlomu and Mqhele's relationship through hardships and bliss.
*Naledi by Dudu Busani Dube:
(I read this on wordpress.com and the author has posted the first twelve chapters which means that my summary will be incomplete so I will not be making one)
*Love found me broken by Khwezi Buthelezi:
The story follows a young girl whose life changes in an instant and in the process she suprisingly finds love.
*My sister's keeper by Nolwazi Mbuli:
Nomonde Gumede spends 15 years in prision and once she comes out she strives to prove her innocence and she also discovers the harsh truth regarding her sister whilst also finding love in the process
*Beauty beyond the orange uniform by Karabo:
A young christian lady from a disadvantaged background makes it as a big shot lawyer but ends up falling for one of her clients. This love story is filled with endurement of difficult situations..
*Being a housewife was my profession by Lerato Malinga:
There are two parts to this novel. In the first part Oyintando and her husband separate and she meets a new man who loves her children like his own . However a tragic event occurs . In the second part it focuses on her son's spiritual journey.
Now I have noticed that all these novels have recurring themes such as violence, sexual scenes and much more which I can dive deeper into if you guys would want me to.
You also realise in some of these novels, the male character that the main charcters tend to fall in love with are involved in suspicious activities(which are illegal most of the time). The women tend to also stay with these men even after being abused countless times.
To conclude, these books may not be everyone's cup of tea in terms of the themes they follow but I enjoyed reading these.
